"After our second session I came to the joyous realization that back pain does not have to be part of the normal aging process."
                     -Cindy Neureuther, Retired, Age 56

British Medical Journal Published Research, August 19 2008

This "gold standard" study was a large-scale (579 patients), controlled study specifically looking at using the Alexander Technique to manage chronic and recurrent back pain. It was done at Southampton University and Bristol University in the UK. The results were published in the British Medical Journal.

Patients were randomized to receive normal care from their doctors (pain killers & behavior counseling), six massage sessions, six Alexander lessons, or 24 Alexander lessons; half of these groups were randomized to receive an exercise prescription (predominantly walking) as well.

- Patients went from 21 days in pain a month (normal care from their doctor) to only three days of pain per month (with 24 AT lessons.)

- The Alexander Technique alone (without exercise) reduced days in pain by 86%, reported after one year.

- Participants reported less pain and an ability to do more.

If you are living with back pain, I really encourage you to come for a series of lessons. I'd be happy to explain how the technique is taught and why it's so helpful for back pain. I always give free, phone consultations, 510-528-3109.
